Nature reports on suspension of plant biologist Olivier Voinnet by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). The reason is alteration of images in over 20 papers to make them "look cleaner or more convincing." I know nothing about this scientist or even this particular field but a quote from the report struck me:
“The tragedy is that the experiments that were (mis)reported in the papers investigated by the commission were actually conducted and, as based on the data inspection by the commission, executed with care.”
The 2-year suspension seems really harsh in light of that. I thought everyone played with contrasts or photo settings. I don't know if it makes me feel better or worse that someone is being punished for it.
